For over two thousand years, The Chalice Well, in Glastonbury, England has been an incredible locus of serenity and spirit.
Considered a focus of peace, spirituality, and healing for people of all faiths, the Chalice Well is truly awe inspiring. Peter Stone honors the holiness of the site with a beautiful collection of elegant Chalice Well jewelry, and offers this short history of the well and its significance.
Amazing Continuity
Situated at the foot of Glastonbury Tor, the spring has NEVER failed, even during drought. Water issues from the well at an astonishing rate of 25,000 gallons per day, and the iron oxide deposits in the area give the water a reddish color.
The healing waters, centered in the sequestered sanctuary of the Vale of Avalon, offer a comprehensive healing package—solace, inspiration, and peace abound amidst the beautiful orchards and quiet gardens. Sunlight, nature’s greenery, a breeze across the surface of the water—utter serenity.
The Chalice Well is revered for being the place where Joseph of Arimathea placed the Chalice that caught the drops of Christ’s blood at the Crucifixion. Some also celebrate the symbolism of the red water, springing miraculously forth from the earth like the blood of Christ.
Others honor the waters as the essence of life, the gift from Mother Earth to sustain all life, and so pay tribute to the Chalice Well as a direct expression of the unending life force of this Earth. For many pagans, the site is sacred because it represents the divine feminine, in contrast to the nearby tor, which symbolizes the masculine aspect.
Interconnection: Vesica Piscis
In Irish and Welsh mythology, wells are considered gateways to the spirit world, and the Chalice Well cover, beautifully designed by church architect Frederick Bligh Bond, features the Vesica Piscis design to highlight this overlap of inner and outer worlds.
The Vesica Piscis design is based on ancient and intuitive symbolism— the two spheres, interconnected, divided by a sword (the spear is thought to reference Excalibur, the legendary sword of King Arthur, who is believed to be buried nearby at the Glastonbury Abbey), surrounded by local foliage revered for its midwinter flowering.
Spiritual travelers visit the Chalice Well to seek the incredible peace and healing that abound there, and events are held on the grounds at various times during the year to share the intrinsic message of peace.
Absorbing the atmosphere of the vale, partaking of the healing water, and sharing a sliver of history—feeling the POWER of connection and continuity—these experiences create an uplifting, inspirational sense of peace.
Peter Stone offers you an opportunity to share in the spirituality of this holy well with absolutely stunning translations of the Vesica Picsis design that convey the awesome sense of solace and connection that the Chalice Well represents.
