The presence of animals in our lives is an ancient thread that has brought us uncountable benefits throughout history. Having a pet or companion animal brings comfort, joy, friendship, and in the case of service animals, increased freedom and self-sufficiency. Animals have been shown to speed healing, facilitate therapy, and promote longevity, and ask so little in return for such phenomenal service.
Cats: Egyptian Gods in Mufti
Cats are widely believed to have been domesticated in Egypt more than 2000 years BCE. However, support for human-feline companionship has been found in other areas as early as 7500 BCE, as evidenced by joint burials at Neolithic sites.
The true popularity of cats as pets, however, did reach its peak in Egypt. In the beginning, as feral animals, the cats in the region preyed on the vermin that infested the crops and granaries. Egyptians began inviting the cats into their homes to rid them of rats and mice, as well. Over a period of time, the cat gained enormous respect and became entwined with the religion of ancient Egypt.
Two powerful deities were depicted with feline heads, and whole cities were devoted to their worship. At one point in history, the killing of a cat, even unintentionally, was punishable by death. When cats did die, they were often mummified out of reverence and respect. In 1888, a 4,000-year-old tomb of felines was discovered outside of the town of Beni Hasan, containing over 80,000 mummified cats and kittens.
Cats Today
Since then, cats have lost their godly status, but have retained their position as family pets. Housecats have surged ahead in the United States as a pet choice, with over 34.8 million households claiming cat ownership. Cats have inspired countless cat-lover and cat rescue organizations, blockbuster movies, and funny cat trick You Tube videos. Although cats are often maligned as aloof and independent, they can make loyal and loving companions, and there are many cat owners out there who insist that their cats have saved their lives in various ways, and enhanced their lives in others.
